Immigration from Norway to America!

Hey dudes and girls! Our assignment this week is to write about immigration to the USA! I'm going to write about immigration from Norway to the USA, because i think it's very interesting!

Norwegian immigration to America was said to have begun with the Viking explorer Leif Ericsson, the son of Eric the Red. Leif Ericsson, who was of Norwegian origin, is regarded by many as the first European to visit the North American continent, nearly 500 years before Christopher Columbus. Leif Ericsson established a Viking colony in the land he called "Vinland" in 1002, on the northern tip of Newfoundland in today's Canada!

The history of Norwegian Immigration to America is recognized as starting in 1825 on the Norwegian sloop Restauration, although the first Norwegian settlers joined the Dutch in New Netherlands. The major Norwegian immigration waves to America occurred in the 1800's:
-Norwegian settlers joined Dutch colonists in New Netherland during the Colonial era
-The first significant wave Norwegian Immigration to America started in 1825 by a group of Lutheran priests and Quakers, to avoid religious persecution in Norway and gain religious freedom in America.
-The next wave of Norwegian immigration was much larger and sparked by economic reasons and corp failure after the American Civil War (1861 - 1865) when 100,896 Norwegians entered the USA.
-The final, major wave of Norwegian immigration, was between 1880 - 1890 when a total of 256,068 Norwegians emigrated to the USA prompted by employment opportunities during the industrialization of America and cheaper faster travel by steam boat!

Here you can see a 6 minute video of the Norwegian immigration to America! It's quite interesting!
